We are all unhappy. Yes we are!! In varying degrees i agree, but certainly we are. We all want to be happy and why shouldn’t we be. Somehow that keeps us going, the pursuit of happiness. We hardly acknowledge it and worse; not make a conscious effort to work for it. The whole point of living is to be happy and have a good time and at the end of the day kick the bucket satisfied.
But somehow, inexplicably we cant be happy being happy all the time with no worries. Well we aren’t really happy either. Just those certain things (which trouble us) have been swept under the carpet. We have been programmed to worry, to live the struggle, and untangle the mess. However most of us are really wary of untangling it all. Making life simple is not an easy task but it would be tougher on you if you did. As then you would know all answers and be devastated for not yet being able to solve them. And why cant we solve them? There is always a missing piece, an invisible cog we are unable to find, that when found would unlock bliss. But we are a complacent crowd. We are too lazy to take a step and find the piece. We tend to resign to our fates near the difficult end as easily as we put up a fight when we are pushed to the wall. And we complain a lot when we are somewhere in between.
Happy is what happy get. We can always start a day being happy and go through our daily routine and keep doing what we want to. But we are forced to do something else and call it duty. Our actions determine our feelings and emotions. To have a choice to what we should feel happy or sad, weak or strong etc, we better choose our actions ourselves for the good or for the bad. At the end of the day we all know deep down inside however vehemently we try to deny it no one really knows us like we ourselves do.

nice....... sumarised wat we all goin thru....... but i kinda disagree on wat u said. the fact tht when u finish ur duties u will be happy keeps most ppl going. so u see. the only way to be happy is to be pissed of wth life a first.
nice post, like always. :) ..just want to say here..though not sure if it would be appropriate, but since we're talking about "happiness" anyway.. every moment we are alive is because there is some happiness within somewhere.
keep posting.
Why can't someone be happy?
Its because each one of us has a definite measure of happiness which we see in the "ideal happy man" we have created to compare ourselves constantly with.
Do not create this ideal happy man, Do not acknowledge all the tatas birlas and other people branded "happier than the rest of us" by the society.
There lies happiness.
I am a cave man, and my cave is the best accomodation anyone in the world can ever achieve.
And no, I haven't heard of Bill gates or the fact that he can set the temperature of his warm bath 15 miles away from his house.
happiness huh?
happiness can be discovered in the most trivial of things...it is the eye of the heart that can see it...to open that eye is ofcourse difficult...the bible declares that"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness comprehend it not" ...i.e happiness is everywhere ,it is for us to discover("without the truth to the eye the happyfolk were blind" as someone said).And regarding sadness it is only due to emotional imbalance.If someone is really that sad then solving the equations of emotional imbalance might help....and i am wonderin how do we do that?
@Kaustubh
No man.. i never said finishing ur duties will make ye happy.. i was sarcastic abt ppl who say tht..
@Abhiram
I am not talking about any Ideal Happiness like an ideal gas or something... Happiness is not complacency.. U r a cave man agreed!:P u love ur cave.. u r happy.. agreed..but wanting more doesnt mean tht u are unhappy.. maybe u wud just want to be more happier.. Wanting to be more happier can either undo all ur happiness or build it. All on how u take it.

If sadness is emotional imbalance isnt happiness too? is Emotional balance means being indifferent on the overall scale?
ok, nice piece there!
Really appreciate your "pursuit of happYness", hope you succeed. coming to the article, this is what i have to say about the issue:
1) happiness is all around you,one has to get a sense of it, give a personal definition to it and cherish it.
2) You have often heard people say they find happiness in other peoples happiness, i thought i grew tired of listening to it, but it makes a lot of sense.
3) Give yourself a chance to be happy, do not be cynical, its being the easiest thing in the world, appreciate the things around you.
4) i am safe to say, happiness can be ephemeral if u get addicted to it, a first hand experience at watching "happiness" being snatched away from you can get u talking like this.
5) a few quotes i find interesting:
"Happiness is like a cloud, if you stare at it long enough, it evaporates"
“Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible.”
“Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed.”
6) there is happiness in love,in anger, in various emotions, there is happiness in the littlest of things, the most trivial, happiness in finding your article has many views, your views have many listeners, simple things that constitute the big picture.
PS: i must say, i am "un-happy"(lol) at your reaction to the comments above, they have all given their perspective on happiness, something that might differ from yours, but nonetheless, from people who have an understanding of happiness, in their own terms.
hey i have to quote ths.. came accross it in sum movie, i dont rememebr which.. we're all unhappy.. the people tht are happy are just too numb to feel the pain..
